Hi ill-advised,

I just tried to leave a comment on one of your earlier posts (http://illadvised.blogspot.com/2007/07/book-pietro-bembo-lyric-poetry.html) and nearly gave up since even after providing my Google ID, blogspot demanded that I open an account with them to post a message. I finally went for Anonymous and that worked.

Checking your most recent post I found this on Robt Service, and to your wondering about the character of this member of the used book selling tribe, a recent article in the Portland Oregonian concerned shoving matches and threats by employees of one online bookseller over the bins of books wheeled out at the Goodwill 'big-lots' store (I forget the term for it). This guys thugs would follow other shoppers around and grab up whole armloads of books to keep others from getting them, then take them off to check the barcodes. The 'net has made used bookselling a ruthless mass-market business; I see listings on Amazon where the book sells for a penny, and the seller makes his profit from his part of the $3.99 shipping fee. A company has hornswoggled library friends groups into deals where the company places metal book deposit-bins around town, then they go through the books, skim off all the ones that are worth anything, and give the others and a small fee to the library or the Friends. Our Friends group tries to scan all donations to see what we ought to check for possible sale online (by us), then all other books are sold for $1.50 or less at our small book store, which is a good resource for people in our rural area. The only bookstore in 20 miles.

Glad to have found your blog, and thought if you wondered why so few comments...blogspot's practices might be the reason.
